Sand Hill Cranes November 2009 : A pair of Sand Hill cranes came to a field near my home to feed during the day and I took advantage of the opportunity to get these photos. I find them to be particularly stately birds. They shared the field with two or three cows, generally getting along well with one another.

Everglades Summer - Skies and Green : Images from a week long workshop with Robert Chaplin in the Everglades - looking for lightening and dramatic skies. We kept the mosquitos at bay with DEET, bug suits and therma cells. While it was hot, the precautions really kept the mosquitos down. Nature really is dramatic and colorful in the summer in Florida.

Florida Nature 2007 : Selected images of Nature in Florida from 2007Okeechobee, the second biggest fresh water lake in the US - hence Big 'O.' Went visited a variety of sites including Dinner Island, Fish Eating Creek, and Storm Water Treatment Area 5. I saw a lot of interesting birds and learned much - I am still very much a novice at bird identification. On Sunday afternoon I went down to Corkscrew swamp and got some pictures reflecting the drying up of the lettuce lakes.

Grand Canyon 2012 : I had the good fortune to again raft through the Grand Canyon on a photo tour led by Ralph Lee Hopkins. It was distinct from my trip 2 years ago - warmer, fewer flowers, more mountain goats. I found many of my favorite photos came from the same spots. I have tried to give a different perspective to the canyon in these images. The Grand Canyon is truly mind expanding - it deals with times beyond any intuitive grasp by a human being.

Rochester Mn : My Postgraduate Medical Education was at the Mayo Clinic. I continue to visit Rochester from time to time - usually in the warmer months as my residence is now in Florida. I had occasion to visit in late March 2012 and took the pictures in this gallery at that time. There are only 2 images of people that show faces and those have been blurred - out of respect for privacy. John Welch, the former head of the Mayo Graduate School once said to me during a walk from Rochester Methodist Hospital to the Clinic: " this place wasn't built by failure." The clinic continues to grow and his words ring true to me to this day. My pictures are an attempt to use the architecture and forms of the complex to give a sense of the place: the three pillars of strength, creativity, and caring which epitomize the clinic. To some extent these images are abstract, so there may be more variation in individual taste regarding the images than is usually expressed about my images. I am certainly interested in any feedback. I have also included both a video slide show, and individual stills to accommodate viewing preferences.

Polarbears of the Tundra : Near Churchill, Canada November 2006 The polar bears spend their summers on the Tundra near Churchill which is on the western shore of Hudson Bay. Once the bay freezes they head north to eat. They congregate near Churchill in mid November as that is when the ice forms.

Grand Canyon 2010 selects : In preparation for a repeat trip by raft through the Grand Canyon I decided to review and rework my photos from 2 years ago. I have pared down the number for this gallery. Many are what is called High Dynamic range images that are a blend between 3 exposures. I feel the technology for that has improved, as my skill in using it.

Lima, Cuzco and the Sacred Valley : A trip to Machu Picchu starts with a flight to Lima, Peru, then from Lima to Cuzco (which is at 11,000 feet). Our stay in Cuzco included a visit to La Catedral with it's wealth of colonial art, and to the central market. We visited Saqsaywaman an Inca stronghold above the city from which the Inca made their last attempt to expel the spanish, After 2 nights in Cuzco we traveled into the Sacred Valley of the Inca and spent 2 nights at a hotel called Sol Y Luna in recognition of the Inca interest in astronomy. We visited several historic sites while in the sacred valley. We then traveled on to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu : Photos from a trip to Machu Picchu, the Inca high in the Peruvian Andes. We visited Machu Picchu the 2nd week of April 2011. The city is reached first by train along the Urabamba River which forms the bottom of a deep and steep canyon. The Name Machu Picchu means 'Old Mountain' in Quechua - the language of the 'inca' people. One gets from the train station at the foot of the mountain to the ruins by buses that follow a switch back road up the mountain to the saddle between Machu Picchu and Huyana Picchu (young mountain) where the ruins are located. The habitat is cloud forest which means it was green and in some ways tropical with orchids and luxuriant undergrowth.

Galapagos - Santa Cruz, Espanola, Floriana : A visit to the Galapagos is a visit to islands which are young in geologic terms, and which have distinct microclimates. The cold Humboldt current coming from the south and the warmer Cromwell current from the west. The Islands are 500 miles from the mainland so there are no native landbased mammals. The archipelago is an Ecuadorian national Park and nature preserve with just a few small cities. The animals seem quite tolerant of their human observers. For the sake of simplicity I have divided the photos I made in the Galapagos by Island group. I have tried to properly identify the animals. For me specific identification of the different finch was a challege. There are two types of Frigate bird in the Galapagos - the magnificent and the Great. The distinguishing features aren't always readily apparent - at least to me. I am receptive to refinements and corrections with regard to identification.

Patagonia 2009 : Images from a trip to Patagonia (Southern South America) in late March and early April of 2009. In Argentina we visited Beroloche and El Calafate (including the Parque Nacional de Glacieres.) In Chile we visited Parque Nacionale de Torres de Paine. The overwhelming sense of the place was its remoteness and immensity.

Samburu : From Mugie we flew east about 100 miles on a small plane to Samburu preserve. It is named after the Samburu tribe whose homeland surrounds the preserve. The Ewaso Nyiro river runs eastwards through the preserve which is otherwise quite arid. That means much of the wildlife congregates near the river. We stayed in tents on the banks of the river and frequently had elephants passing through our camp, and on one afternoon about 30 spent 3 hours foraging around the camp. As long as we stayed by the tents they left us alone. We visited a Samburu village (one of our spotters was Samburu and his village was close by.)

Lewa : From Samburu we flew south towards Mt. Kenya to the Lewa Nature preserve - an important local for the preservation of black Rhinos. e did a 2 day walking trip through the preserve. Our guide carried a gun just in case. But I was never sure if he'd use it to protect us. I asked him if he'd get in more trouble for shooting a rhino or for having one of us run down by a rhino, and he just grinned. We slept in tents, and on the second evening the Masai slaughtered a goat for a Bar-B-Que, and to drink the blood, which is one of their dietary staples. Perhaps the most exciting event was kneeling down 30 yards from a white rhino, and having it continuously interrupt its feeding to look in our direction. At one point it even pawed the ground and snorted.

Nakuru : From Lewa we traveled to Nakuru which is southwest of Nairobi, and west of Mt Kenya. It is relatively close to Nairobi, and is relatively lush. It has a variety of animals - perhaps most prominent being the greater and lesser flamingos. We were back in our tents. Perhaps the most unusual thing we saw was two Cape Buffalo who had gotten their horns interlocked, and then fallen to the ground so that one had broken its neck and died and the other was trapped until it died. They were appropriated by a male lion, and also fed some hyenas and jackals.

Shampole : From Nakuru we flew south to Shampole where we stayed in a lodge for two nights. The architecture of the lodge is dramatic, and it overlooks Mt Shampole and the rift valley. While there is a river bed nearby, it was dry as the rainey season hadn't started. The lodge is near one of the only water holes in the area, and lions hang out there. It is a relatively short drive south to Lake Natron.

Amarillyis Belladonna : The Amaryllis Belladonna is commonly known as the Naked lady - because the flower doesn't appear until after the leaves are gone, and its lovely color. These photos were taken with flash, and are actively growing plants - still in place. When the background appears black it is because it is receiving minimal light in comparison to the flower.

Nepal 2008 Highlights : In May 2008 I traveled to Nepal with two friends, and after a short stay in Kathmandu we spent 23 days walking arround the Annapurna Himal. To get from the east to the west side we crossed the Thorong La a 17,700 foot pass. The Annapurna circuit, as that trek is called, is said to be one of the world's 10 most scenic treks and I can believe that. I have found it difficult to pare down the number of pictures so have indluded some highlights in this gallery. Marble Mountain Wilderness : 2 friends and I hiked into the Marble mountain Wilderness - part of the North Trinity Alps in late September of 2009. We hiked up along canyon creek to the Sky high lakes basin. We'd been warned that it might rain or snow, and indeed it did. As soon as we started to make camp it began to hail, and shortly that changed to snow flurries. It never snowed heavily, and the ground was warm enough that there was less than an inch by morning. It was a chilly night.

Galapagos-James, Tower, N Seymour, Plaza : Tower Island was for me the most interesting island. One ascends the Prince Phillips steps (a stone stairway) to the top of a flooded volcanic crater to find a host of birds sompletely unimpressed by their human visitors. A visit to these islands leaves one impressed by Darwin's ability to extrapolate from his observations to his recognition of the relationship between speciation and habitat.

Angkor Wat Cambodia : Angkor Wat is the contemporary name given to the ruins of what was the largest city in the world around 1100. It was a major rice growing area and trade route between India and China. The Khmer civilization had discovered how to construct reservoirs which allowed more productive rice farming. It was a major religious center, switching between Hindu and Buddhist with occasional changes in rulers. The development of oceanic trade routes with the coming of the europeans spelled the end to its dynasty. Only a small portion of the original city has been partially restored. It is accessed from Siem Reap. We flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. This had been a particularly wet rainy season so there was much high water around the sanctuary. "Wat' is the designation for temple. Angkor Wat is both the designation given the entire preserve, and its largest contained development. The larger area is called Angkor Thom, and contains multiple temples.
