Birds March 30-April1 : I spent the weekend of March30-April 1 at the Big O birding festival. It was based in Moore Haven Florida 0n the west shore of Lake Okeechobee, the second biggest fresh water lake in the US - hence Big 'O.' Went visited a variety of sites including Dinner Island, Fish Eating Creek, and Storm Water Treatment Area 5. I saw a lot of interesting birds and learned much - I am still very much a novice at bird identification. On Sunday afternoon I went down to Corkscrew swamp and got some pictures reflecting the drying up of the lettuce lakes.

Amarillyis Belladonna : The Amaryllis Belladonna is commonly known as the Naked lady - because the flower doesn't appear until after the leaves are gone, and its lovely color. These photos were taken with flash, and are actively growing plants - still in place. When the background appears black it is because it is receiving minimal light in comparison to the flower.

Polarbears of the Tundra : Near Churchill, Canada November 2006 The polar bears spend their summers on the Tundra near Churchill which is on the western shore of Hudson Bay. Once the bay freezes they head north to eat. They congregate near Churchill in mid November as that is when the ice forms.

Nepal 2008 Highlights : In May 2008 I traveled to Nepal with two friends, and after a short stay in Kathmandu we spent 23 days walking arround the Annapurna Himal. To get from the east to the west side we crossed the Thorong La a 17,700 foot pass. The Annapurna circuit, as that trek is called, is said to be one of the world's 10 most scenic treks and I can believe that. I have found it difficult to pare down the number of pictures so have indluded some highlights in this gallery. Patagonia 2009 : Images from a trip to Patagonia (Southern South America) in late March and early April of 2009. In Argentina we visited Beroloche and El Calafate (including the Parque Nacional de Glacieres.) In Chile we visited Parque Nacionale de Torres de Paine. Marble Mountain Wilderness : 2 friends and I hiked into the Marble mountain Wilderness - part of the North Trinity Alps in late September of 2009. We hiked up along canyon creek to the Sky high lakes basin. We'd been warned that it might rain or snow, and indeed it did. As soon as we started to make camp it began to hail, and shortly that changed to snow flurries. It never snowed heavily, and the ground was warm enough that there was less than an inch by morning. It was a chilly night.
